Penny Pincher Tip #3 Sleep in a University Residence

If you are looking to save a few dimes on accommodations, many people turn to hostels for their inexpensive, laid-back, and traveller-friendly atmosphere.  However, sleeping in a room with 3, 7, 9, or more roomates isn’t for everyone and it can leave you longing for some privacy and some down time.  A great alternative for hostels in the summer time are University (or College) Residences.  With most students leaving the campus over the summer months, many schools open up their dorms for short-term rentals.  The price tag and layouts of the rooms can vary significantly depending on the school and residence.  Often you will get a single room with a desk, drawers or closet, and access to communal bathrooms.  In some cases you might have a sink or even a full bathroom in your room for a few dollars more.  I have stayed at a number of different dorms and feel they are good value for money and is a nice compromise from being surrounded by people all the time and paying hotel-prices for some privacy.  They are not fancy by any stretch, but they offer a clean and inexpensive place to get some sleep.  They are also terrific if you need to do some work because the majority offer Wi-Fi in the room and have great work space.  Expect to pay around 50$ per night for a basic room up to 80$ for a room with private bathroom.
