Patisserie L’Artisan: Gluten-Free and Milk-Free Bakery

My nephew is severely allergic to all milk products, therefore my sister is always on the lookout for substitutes so that he can lead a so-called ‘normal life’ that doesn’t make him feel deprived.  Word of mouth led to the discovery of L’artisan délices sans gluten bakery in Montreal, located at 7700 Rue St-Hubert.  As their name indicates, their products are gluten-free and they carry vegan options as well!  A bit sceptical as to how tasty the desserts would be, we decided to try out some of their products.  I picked up a croissant, chocolatine, coffee éclair, Paris-Brest, and chocolate mousse cake.

Tasting the Desserts

By far the stand-out was the Paris-Brest with a delicate almond flavor and you would never guess the filling was vegan.  A close second was the coffee éclair, whose dough was very similar to a traditional choux pastry and the cream was light and fluffy.  The chocolate mousse cake was OK, but I am not a huge chocolate fan so I am little bias.  I will say that the ganache on top was excellent and not too sweet.  As for the croissant and chocolatine, I found the dough to be a little denser and lacked the flakiness of regular croissants.  However, if you have to eat gluten or dairy-free products, I think you will appreciate these pastries anyways.  They can also produce custom pastries that are free of other allergens like nuts and soy.

The verdict on this place: Definitely an A+.  For a bakery that has been opened just a few months it’s definitely making a name for themselves and I will personally be back for more goodies that my family and specifically nephew can enjoy.
