5 Things to do in Hawrelak Park

Located on the south side of the North Saskatchewan river, Hawrelak is a beautiful park to discover throughout the year.  It’s lush green surroundings make you forget that you are still in the city, and there are lots of activities available to keep you busy.

1. Have a picnic: Whether you are hosting a large family party, having a BBQ lunch with friends, or spending a lazy day alone snacking on a blanket, Hawrelak Park has the facilities available.  It’s a great place to get-away from the city without ever having to leave Edmonton.

2. See a performance:  In the middle of the park is the large Heritage Amphitheatre that plays hosts to a number of performances and activities throughout the year such as the Freewill Shakespeare Festival.  Visit the City of Edmonton website for details on upcoming events.

3. Go boating: Pedal boats are available for rent in the park for 20 or 40 minutes.  Heading onto the lake is a fun way to explore the park from a different prospective.  Be warned that you cannot bring your own boat or go swimming.

4. Bike/run/rollerblade: With over 2KM of paved road that makes it’s way around the park, it’s perfect for getting some exercise without needing to worry about traffic.

5. Bird-Watching: There is a healthy number of ducks and loons that call the park home.  These birds are definitely not camera or people-shy so you it makes observing them pretty easy, but make sure you don’t feed them!
