Restaurant Guide for the Magdalen Islands, Quebec

The Magdalen Islands are not huge but they do pack in lots of tasty restaurants in a small space.  Here is a guide to some of the highlights to check out if you are passing through:

Starting the day off right with Breakfast: Le Sablier, 257 Route 199, Havre-aux-Maisons. Located across the street from the water provides amazing views as you sip your coffee and tuck in on some hearty breakfast favorites.  They have all the classics (eggs, toast, bacon) along with healthier breakfast options and some innovative sandwiches, all at very reasonable prices.

Quick bite for Lunch: Pizza d’la Pointe, 86 Route 199, Havre-aux-Maisons.  Standing by the ordering counter waiting for my take-out, I heard one thing being ordered over and over again: the Fisherman Pizza.  The restaurant has quite an impressive and unique pizza flavors on the menu, but the fisherman pizza captures the essence of the islands.  It’s topped with lobster, shrimp, and scallops, with a white sauce… yum!  The place also has a great terrasse in the back for long. lazy, afternoons.

Savouring local dishes over SupperLa Mouliere, 292 Route 199, Havre-aux-Maisons.  For a slightly more upscale dining experience, La Mouliere provides the perfect location to get a taste of the local flavors and products of the ‘terroir’.  The service is attentive, the food tasty and filling, all in a quaint atmosphere. They also have lunch available with the meals at a slightly reduced price, so take advantage if your budget is on the tighter side.

Indulging in Sweets anytime:  Pâtisserie Hélène des Îles, 90 Route 199, Havre-aux-Maisons.  I could have spent my entire day here.  When you walk in the shop you are treated to the most decadent smell that instantly makes your mouth water.  Than you look at the display cabinet of goodies and you are tempted to just order one of everything.  I really liked their éclairs and cookies, so make sure you try those out.

Chilling out with some Coffee: Cafe d’chez-nous, 1-97 chemin Principal, Cap-aux-Meules.  This cool place with the menu written all over the walls in chalk has a definite hippy, laid-back vibe.  They make awesome coffees and the food looks good as well.  It’s the perfect place to take a moment to relax and people watch.

Late night Drinks taking in the sunset: Vent du Large, 1009 chemin de La Grave, Havre-Aubert.  If you are craving a more urban venue, the cool lounge feel of Vent du Large will likely fill that need.  It’s effortless chic, has a varied tapas menu, and provides the best seats to see the sunset.  There is also some live music if you are into that type of thing.  Plus La Grave is a fun place to visit with lots of shops, so make this your final destination in a day exploring the surroundings.
