Eating alone at a restaurant can be incredibly awkward and uncomfortable. However, here are five tips that can help make the experience more pleasant:
1. Bring a phone, book, or ask for a newspaper: Most of us have our phones permanently glued to our hands, so they are a great distraction when sitting alone. In more laid back restaurants there are usually newspapers available for browsing or just bring a book to read while waiting for your food. ipads, diaries and sketch pads make great company as well.
2. Engage the waiter in conversation: When a restaurant is not super busy, I often have great discussions with the wait staff by taking the opportunity to ask about the food and the city I’m in. Even though you will still find yourself alone while you eat, I’ve found most waiters to be extra attentive when you make the effort to chat with them and they will check in on you more often giving you someone to chat with even if it’s briefly.
3. Sit at the bar: A bar is an automatic table for 1 and less lonely than staring at the empty seat across from you. It’s also great because you have your back turned to most people, making you less self-concious. Plus the bartender can be an interesting person to get to know!
4. Sit by a window: Instead of being worried about being watched by others, engage in your own people watching by sitting by a window. It’s instant entertainment and you can enjoy some spectacular views.
5. Avoid busy restaurants: I once found myself in a busy restaurant at dinner time occupying a table for 4 people because that was all that was available when I arrived. Well, the waiter kept rushing me and couldn’t wait that I left so he could get a larger dinner party (and more tip). If this is something that would bother you than avoiding peak hours might be helpful. An added bonus, there will be less people that might be staring at you and making you feel uncomfortable.
