Birthday Musings and Highlights

Birthday Reflections

Another year, another birthday… that’s the way it works right? This year I turned 35 years old. Yikes, I feel like just yesterday I was celebrating 30 years (or quite frankly 19 years) and I had a 5-year plan. Like most people, when I think back about where I thought I would be now, my life looks pretty different. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Having goals and dreams are imperative to have something to strive towards and work for. In the end you may not accomplish everything but at least you know you tried… and that’s what’s important. So I am choosing to look at the glass at being half full! Let’s see where I end up in another 5 years.

Now enough with these musings and on to the best part of birthdays: cake and gifts!

My Birthday Cake

Similar to last year, my nephew wanted to prepare my birthday cake. Like a true professional baker, we met to discuss flavours and theme for the cake. He might only be 7 years old but he took the entire process very seriously. Even sketching a cake design on paper. I opted for what I thought would be an easy theme for him to interpret: flowers. I have to say he did an excellent job on it! I loved seeing how proud and excited he was as he presented the final product to me. It was his first time using fondant and I think he did a pretty respectable job. Luckily, the cake looked good and tasted good!

The Best Gifts

To be frank, I am not big on gifts. I much rather just spend quality time with the people I love (preferrably around a pool). It drives my mom crazy because she never knows what to buy me. I will list her some items and then 5 minutes later be like, “yeah never mind, I don’t really need them”. In reality it’s her fault. Every time we went shopping and I wanted to buy something she would ask, “but do you really need it?” So there you go.

I did get some fun stuff from my sister and nephew. A lovely mug that says, “Aunt like a mom only cooler”. Truth. My nephew picked out for me a pink and purple skipper alongside a car freshner. The latter is really more for him as he always complains my car smells weird. It doesn’t, he’s the weird one lol.

My mom’s gift was ultimately enduring me while we tried to take nice photos with my birthday balloons. I complain she’s a terrible photographer, she complains I’m a terrible model. It’s really a miracle we got these to look this good.

And that’s a wrap on another birthday celebration. Now I have the responsibility of getting my nephew’s cake done for his birthday just over a week after me! More to come.
