I dream of heading to Scotland and visiting the amazing castles. In the interim, there are some pretty amazing ‘castles’ right here in Canada. More specifically, Victoria in British Colombia is home to three amazing buildings that are rich with architectural details and history.
1. The Empress Hotel (721 Government St)
This up scale hotel is by far one of the most recognisable landmark in Victoria. Situated overlooking the harbour, the Empress is a worthwhile visit for all visitors to Victoria. Visit the various shops in the lobby or walk the outdoor gardens in the summer time. If you can’t afford an overnight at the hotel, I highly recommend checking out their world famous high tea. Guaranteed to transport you back to the Edwardian era.
2. Craigdarroch Castle (1050 Joan Crescent)
Located in a quaint residential neighbourhood within a 30 minute walk from Victoria Harbour, this castle is simply breathtaking. Each room has been staged with period furniture, accessories and a few mannequins, allowing you to do some time travelling and appreciate the history behind this property. The highlight is without a doubt, the high tower which is fit for Repunzel to let her hair down, but alas this castle had no such princess in residence last time I was there.
3. Hatley Castle (2005 Sooke rd)
By far the most spectacular of the three castles in Victoria, I fell in love with this castle the moment I saw it. It may not have a crocodile-filled moat but it’s got beautiful gardens, and exquisite views. Completed in 1908, this outlandish property has been expertly preserved. It is available for rental for weddings and conferences, but is open for visits to the public. Don’t miss out!
