Penny Pincher Tip #5 Walk Walk Walk

I know this travel tip sounds super evident, but just because you know it’s cheaper to walk doesn’t mean you actually end up walking. There are a number of deterrents to walking when you are travelling so here are some ways that you can plan ahead to make sure that you are prepared to walk for 8 hours in a day and concur any obstacles. Not only will you save cash from not opting for a taxi, but it lets you enjoy the scenery way more.

1. Bad weather: when its pouring rain outside or a snowstorm just hit, it’s easy to skip out on walking. That’s when having the right footwear can make a huge difference. For the summer I swear by Crocs. They are comfy, somewhat stylish and made of plastic. That means even I’d they get soaking wet they will dry super quickly. As for the cold, make sure you bring a pair appropriate for the climate. Also carry a lightweight portable jacket or ultra light travel umbrella for impromptu down pours.

2. Fitness. I am no means out of shape but I do spend 7o% of my awake time sitting at a computer. That’s why the moment I spend an afternoon walking my back starts to ache my feet hurt and so forth. You don’t need to train at a gym to prepare but head out for a few leisure walks to get your body prepared and you won’t be tempted to hail a cab at the en of the day.

3. Safety: one of the main reasons I usually decide to call a taxi is because its late a night and I am alone. never compromise safety to save money. However, if you are going to be out late try to meet up with friends and split the fare home, or go out with an organized group so that you are not alone heading back.

4. Too many bags: oh boy I am so guilty of spending way too much money shopping in New York City and stuck with 10 different bags to drag around (shoeboxes are the worst). Just like debt, the trick to success is to consolidate the number of bags. I like to carry around material bags with comfortable shoulder straps. So rather than juggling bags I’ve got two neatly organized bags that I can comfortably tote around.  Also, instead of travelling with a suitcase, take a backpack.  It’s incredibly easier to navigate subway systems when your hands are free and cheaper!

5. Time: Running late or trying to maximize on a short amount of time usually means driving or making use of a motor vehicle.  Be extra diligent about keeping track of time because as they say, time is money so be wise about how you spend it.
