Just because Costco already has snow suits on sale doesn’t mean the summer is over. In fact, the noisy AC that has been working non-stop dares anyone to go out and buy a snowsuit. If you aren’t so lucky and don’t have any vacation days available here are some fun roadtrips that are do-able over a week-end from Montreal (and the surrounding area).
1. Magog, Quebec (1.5 hrs): I was thoroughly surprised by just how much fun the small town of Magog is. It’s got a lovely public beach, boat tours, local brewery, and a number of shops and restaurants for all tastes. It is also home to their very own monster called Memphre that lives in the lake, what more is there to say!?
2. Lake Placid, New York (2 hrs): So much to see and do in Lake Placid provided that you are travelling during peak seasons (summer / winter). Rent a kayak and head out on Mirror lake or visit the Olympic installations and pretend you’re a world class athlete. It’s super family friendly and perfect for outdoor lovers. Check out my photo diary and food recommendation.
3. Ottawa, Ontario (2 hrs): Home to our nation’s parliament, Ottawa has something for everyone. Fabulous museums, loads of history, beautiful gardens, and outdoor markets. Make sure you stop by the Byward Market for some local food and you check out the Royal Mint, you get to lift a real gold bar.
4. Quebec City, Quebec (2.5 hrs): This may very well be the closest thing to being in Europe without ever taking a plane. The old city is breathtaking with cobblestone streets and century old buildings. If this is your only stop in Quebec, stop by Chez Ashton for an authentic poutine. Check out my proposed itinerary!
5. Mount Washington, New Hampshire (4 hrs): Absolutely terrifying and stunning all at once. Those are the emotions you feel as you wind your way to the top. It can be a bit hit and miss with views since cloudy weather can limit what you see, it also closes with bad weather so you may be forced to re-schedule your visit. The up-side … New Hampshire is a tax-free state so you can go shopping as a consolation.
BONUS 6. l’île Verte, Quebec (4.5 hrs): You want to just get away from the craziness of urban life? Then take the ferry over to l’île Verte and spend the night in the old lighthouse. It’s a quaint escape that re-energizes and seduces you with the amazing vistas.
Do you have any other special spot you like to head-out to on the week-end?
