I have to confess that Edmonton is one of my all-time favourite Canadian cities.  It’s not the sexiest place around, but after spending just under three years living in the city, it’s completely stolen a piece of my heart.  Naturally, I jump on every opportunity I get to go back and visit.  The best time to go is without a doubt the summer.  Not only is it warm but the days are sooooo long that you almost get two days worth out of one.  Below I am sharing some of my favourite attractions in Edmonton that I recommend you check out!

1. Churchill Square: Edmonton is known as a Festival City due to the high number of events that take place each year.  Many of them happening in Churchill square in the centre of downtown Edmonton.  From fitness classes, to the annual Christmas tree lighting, these is always something to see and do.  There are also tables set up with chess and checkers in the warmer months to enjoy the outdoors.  It is also in the vicinity of the City Centre Mall, the Alberta Art Gallery and the Citadel Theater so a great place to drop by en-route to other activities.

2. University of Alberta Campus:  I have such a soft spot for beautiful university/college campuses that make me want to register for classes so I can spend my days lying in the quad reading quietly.   The University of Alberta has tons of old-school charm with buildings like the home of the Faculty of Dentistry combined with some quirky more modern builds like the athletics complex known as the Butterdome.  It also boasts some amazing academic and research facilities, so it’s beautiful to visit and attend as a student.

3. River Valley:  On either side of the North Saskatchewan river is what is known as the River Valley that features many walking and biking trails  (and skiing in the winter) in a wooded landscape.  The River Valley provides breathtaking views on both sides of the river and is especially beautiful in the fall when the leaves change colors.

4. West Edmonton Mall:  Formerly known as the largest mall in the world, West Edmonton Mall is a worthwhile visit if not for the shopping then for the entertainment that it houses.  Ice rink? check. Water slides? check.  Amusement park? check.  Fire breathing dragon?  check!  It’s lots of fun and good exercise to check out all the fun and crazy things this mall features.  It may not have an indoor ski hill but it does have a replication of Christopher Colombus’ boat.

5. Alberta Legislature Building:  Built in the beaux-art style, the legislature building is an iconic building in the Edmonton Skyline.  The building is open 7 days a week and you can either do a self-guided tour, or sign-up for a free guided tour if you want a more in-depth visit.

6. Muttart Conservatory: This botanical garden features four glass pyramids that make for a unique museum experience.  With one of the largest plant collection in Western Canada, three of the four pyramids have a different climate.  The fourth pyramid is used for temporary displays and changes every few months.  It’s a lot of fun for families and is a great learning experience.

7. Hawrelak Park:  Named after William Hawrelak, a former mayor of Edmonton, this large park features a paved 2.5km road that circles the park, a small lake, amphitheater, picnic spots, and numerous walking trails.  In the summer you can rest out pedal boats and head out on the lake.  You can also spend time observing the large duck population who make the park their home.  It’s a beautiful serene place on the South side of Edmonton and free of charge to enter the park.

8. Fort Edmonton Park: The best way to learn about Edmonton’s history is to experience it first hand.  The park features three streets highlighting key historical moments as well as a reconstruction of the Hudson’s Bay Fort that individuals can walk through and explore.  If you happen to be in town during Halloween, then check out their haunted house!

9. Art Gallery of Alberta:  Redesigned in 2009 and opened in 2010, this ever expanding collection is home to a combination of historical and modern artworks.  The building itself is a piece of art with the curved steel that shapes the front entrance.
