Road Trip Bucket List on California’s Highway One

1. Go wine tasting

Obviously! California is known for its terrific wine production and there is no better place to experience the various wines than Santa Ynez Valley.   There are so many wineries to chose from that it can be overwhelming.  Rely on experienced professionals and book yourself a wine tour.  Many of the ones available include hotel pick-ups, a picnic lunch, and a well planned itinerary catering to your preferences.  I opted for Santa Barbara Classic Wine Tours to make the most out of my visiting experience.

2. Explore the rugged coastline

The coastline along Big Sur is by far one of the most beautiful areas you will ever visit.  From the iconic Bixby Bridge to the lovely expansive stretches of wild beach overlooking the powerful waves coming in from the pacific ocean.  Even if you are not a fan of the outdoors, this is definitely a must see!

3. Ride the ferris wheel at Santa Monica Pier

You cannot visit Los Angeles without stopping by Santa Monica Pier and taking a trip on the Ferris Wheel.  Riding to the top of the wheels provides an amazing vantage point to take awesome photos. Aside from the ferris wheel, Santa Monica Pier has a carnival-like atmosphere that makes me reminisce of my childhood.  Grab some cotton candy and enjoy!

4. Shop in Chinatown

San Francisco is home to the oldest Chinatown in North America which is not surprising given that it also has the largest Chinese population outside of Asia.  Bring your appetite and cash to take advantage of all the shops and restaurants featuring authentic Asian cuisine.  I also recommend paying attention to the amazing murals that bring a lot of character and colour to the area.

5. Visit Balboa Park in San Diego

This amazing urban park is home to so much more than just beautiful gardens and walking paths.  Balboa park is home of the famed San Diego Zoo, multiple museums (like the Museum of Man) and of course Casa de Balboa whose architecture is inspired from the Spanish colonial revival style.  Given the variety of activities and attractions that park has to offer, make sure you dedicate a day to visit.

6. Dine on fresh fish in Monterey

From the sea to your dish, Monterey is the place for delicious seafood meal.  Head to the boardwalk for number of restaurants to chose from and enjoy a view of the water and marina.  If you are looking for a vegan option, definitely try El Cantaro.  The Monterey Bay Aquarium hosts a variety of sea creatures and fish that kids will find fascinating.

 7. Observe the sea lions at Elephant rookery

Depending on the time of year, one of the must-see sights are the elephant seals at the Piedras Blancas rookery.  Located near San Simeon, the rookery is a great place to observe the sea lions on the beach in high numbers.  There can be as many as 17,000 which makes for an impressive view.  Don’t be fooled by them lying quietly on the beach, they are not dead just fasting.  The site is free to visit and has parking available.

8. Stare at the sky at the Griffiths observatory

This amazing museum in the Hollywood hills provides such a contrast from the eccentric and lively city below.  The Griffiths observatory provides amazing views of the sky, stars, and beyond.  A family-friendly stop where everyone will be marvelling about the universe.  The observatory is also the start of a hiking trail if you are keen on getting the best view of the Hollywood sign.

9. Immerse yourself in the world of Harry Potter at Universal Studio

I debated so much about going to visit because the price tag can be quite steep.  However, I am super happy that I splurged and went to visit Universal Studios (and specifically the Harry Potter theme park).  It’s unbelievable the amazing work the designers did to bring Hogsmead to life.  Take the time to walk the streets, check out all the stores, and of course enjoy the two amazing rides that take you into Hogwarts and Hagrid’s backyard.

10. Browse the shops in Solvang

For a break from the coastline and wine-tasting by heading to the adorable Danish-inspired town called Solvang.  This town is perfect to stretch out your legs after a lengthy road trip and grab a yummy pastry at the local bakery.  There are charming boutiques and the stylized buildings (including a couple of windmills!) make for a pleasant visit.
