Forillon National Park is more than just an outdoor park, it also encompasses a number of historical sites. Here is a list of activities and landmarks you don’t want to miss during your visit to Forillon.
1. Visit the Lighthouse at Cap-des-Rosiers
This old lighthouse dates back to 1858 and stands 112 feet tall. It is actually recognized as the tallest lighthouse in Canada. For more information about visiting this heritage site check out this post.
2. Discover L’Anse-Blanchette
L’Anse-Blanchette is a heritage site that takes you back to the home of the Blanchette family. The waterfront property includes the family home, barn, fish shed and various other buildings used for drying out cod. Aside from the beautiful location, there are costumed guides on-site to share the rich history of the area dating back to the 1900s.
3. Hike to Land’s End
Put on comfortable shoes, pack water and make your way to Anse-aux-Amérindiens where you can take the Les Graves trail. This 4-km hike with bring you to the Eastern tip of the Gaspé Peninsula known as Land’s End. The views of the Atlantic ocean are a real treat at the end of the hike.
4. Swim at Penouille Beach
There are so many beautiful beaches in Forillon National Park and you could spend the entire summer just visiting the many sandy coves in the Gaspé peninsula. One of the beautiful spots where the water is calmer, is Penouille Beach. Bring your paddle boards, towels, sun umbrellas, and get ready for a relaxing day at the beach.
5. Walk at Cap-Bon-Ami
If there is one place you need to visit while at Forillon National park, it is Cap-Bon-Ami. I think it has the best views in the entire park. When you get there, take the wooden stair down to the pebble beach and walk along the shore while listening to the sound of the water. Cap-Bon-Ami is also the starting point for a few hikes that are well worth your time and energy. For more information check out my other post here.
6. Visit the old war ruins at Fort Peninsula
Located near Penouille beach, Fort Peninsula is a historical site dated back to the Second World War. Walking the underground fortifications is a great way to appreciate the role the Gaspé region played during the war. The fort has been superbly preserved and accessible with picnic tables and washrooms.
7. Go Fishing at Grand-Grave
You can go fishing for Mackerel without any permit in Forillon National park, although the maximum allowed is 10 fish per person. A great fishing spot is at Grand-Grave wharf, however it can get pretty busy so you might have some competition.
8. Kayak outing on the Water
From sunset outings to visiting the sea lions, kayaking is a great way to explore the water. Even if you have never gone kayaking, there are a number of guided group tours that will make you feel at ease on the water.
9. Biking
There are a number of options for bikers in Forillon National Park. For those who prefer off-road or mountain biking there are a variety of options for beginners all the way to experts. For example, La Vallée is a 9km (return) easy ride that crosses the peninsula. You can find parting at the Le Portage Trail at L’Anse-au- Griffon. Likewise, the secondary roads around the park offer road bikers plenty of scenic options along the waterfront.
10. Spend a night Camping
After spending all day enjoying the outdoors, I love nothing more than curling up in a tent and listening to the wind ruffle the leaves outside. The campsites at Forillon National Park offer lots of privacy between lots and the facilities are kept clean. Whether you prefer a tent or the comfort of an RV, I would definitely recommend spending at least one night outside.
