8 Things to do in San Francisco, California

San Francisco is a vibrant city with so much to offer no matter what your interests are.  Whether a solo traveller or vacationing with the family, here are 8 things that you should put on your to do list!

1. Discover Alcatraz Island

There is a good reason tickets sell out quickly, the tour of the prison and island is incredibly engaging and the views of San Francisco are among the best.

2. Experience a Night at the Opera

Get dressed up and head over to the San Francisco Opera house for an evening of entertainment by world renowned artists.  Have supper at one of the many restaurants and cafes that open up a few hours before the show starts.  They also offer champagne packages for some added flare to the evening.  Aside from the outstanding performances, the extravagant decoration and architecture inside the auditorium will is a highlight.

3. Ride the Historic Cable Cars

Step back in time with a ride on these iconic modes of transportation.  Ride on the side to get the best view, but hold on tight!  For a more in-depth look at the history of the cable cars head to the Cable Car Museum.

4. Photograph the Golden Gate Bridge

One of the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge is by climbing to Battery Spencer.  Your best bet is to grab a bus to Sausalito and then make the uphill climb to the top.  You might be tempted to skip it, but trust me you will be rewarded by the lack of crowds and fantastic photo opportunities.

4. Admire the 16th Ave Tiled Steps

A great example of a community drive initiative that has resulted in a beautiful and innovative project.  The tiled steps are located on Morga street between 15 and 16 ave.  There are 163 steps and each riser has been delicately decorated with tiles to produce a large-scale mosaic flowing upwards.  This is definitely an insta-worthy location!

5. Go Shopping in Chinatown

From souvenirs to home decorations, this part of San Francisco has you covered.  Spend the afternoon making your through the number of colourful shops and take the time to grab a bite to eat at the restaurants serving authentic fare.

6. Eat at Fisherman Wharf

Popular among the tourists in San Francisco, the Fisherman Wharf offers seaside dining that adds loads of ambiance. To avoid paying full price, I am a huge fan of happy hours to get to try amazing food at the fraction of the cost a full dinner meal would cost.

7. Climb Coit Tower

For a sweeping view of San Francisco, head over to Coit tower in the Telegraph Hill neighbourhood.  For under 10 dollars you can take an elevator to the top.  At 210 feet in the air, Coit tower provides a 360 degree view of the city including Alcatraz Island.

8. Walk the Crookedest Street

Prior to actually seeing the street, I debated whether it was actually worth my limited time in San Francisco to check it out, but I am happy I did.  Seeing the street wind left and right, is pretty cool and completely unique.  You can drive it or walk along the side.  I say walk it.
