Canadian Postcard: St-Donat, QC

If you are heading to Mont-Tremblant you may find yourself passing through the small town of St-Donat, which is located just on the outskirts along Route 125.  If the name sounds familiar is because you likely tasted their AMAZING sugar pies that are available in most supermarkets.  While St-Donat is tiny, it’s a great alternative destinations for the budget friendly traveller who would prefer not paying a premium for Mont-Tremblant.  There is a small regional airport in Mont-Tremblant, but it’s probably best to fly into Montreal and then rent a car.

St-Donat has plenty to keep you busy, here are some highlights.

FOOD

Boulangerie du Village (413 Principale) Is the perfect place to sit back and enjoy a steaming hot cup of coffee and a treat or two (or three, or four!).  Conveniently located on the main road, it has great atmosphere and delicious food to keep you satisfied.

Clos des Delice (515 Principale) For a more formal take on dining check out this family-run restaurant.  The French-inspired food is mouthwatering and expertly prepared by the local chef.  It’s quite popular so make sure you have reservations for dinner.

ACTIVITIES

Parc des Pionniers (14 Chemin Hector-Bilodeau) Open year round and provides a variety of outdoor activities for the enitre family.  In the summer there is a beach where you can head out for a swim or rent water equipment.  During the colder months, there are great cross-country ski trails, snowshowing, sledding, and a superb ice rink that takes you into the forest.

Centre Equestre de la Riviere-Noire (2591 Route 125 North) If you are fond of horses or always wanted to try horseback riding, this center offers different options to suit beginners and more experienced folks.

Auberge Saint-Donat Spa (350 Route 129) If you are looking for a relaxing retreat, check out this spa for any massage or beauty treatment.  It’s also a great place for an apres-ski and sooth those aching muscles!

LODGING

Hotel Manoir Des Laurentides (290 Rue Principale).  There are not a ton of hotels and accommodations in this small town, but Hotel Manoir is probably your best bet.  You are not going to get blown away with a luxurious rooms, however you will get a clean place to spend your nights in a convenient location.
