When I was visiting Boston, I had a list of desserts I knew I had to taste. Luckily, I was not disappointed by anything I tried and picked out my five favourite sweet treats that I recommend.
1. Salty Toffee Donut at Blackbird Donuts (492 Tremont St.)
I made an extra long detour just to make sure I stopped by Blackbird Donuts and it was totally worth it. Although I was worried the donuts would be too sweet, I was pleasantly surprised by the delicate lemon zest that appears to be incorporated in their batter. That refreshing note just cuts through the sweetness and makes the donut so good!
2. Cream Puffs at Beard Papa’s (Unit A, 31 Harrison Ave.)
Amongst the many Chinese restaurants Beard Papa’s stood out instantly while I was exploring the area. This small bakery from Japan specializes in cream puffs. It looked so fresh and inviting that I could not resist trying out one of their vanilla flavoured cream puff to see what they were like. Not only does the bakery win brownie points for the cute decor but the puffs were pretty stellar as well. Next time I would try their green tea version.
3. Daddy’s Fried Dough Food Cart at Boston Commons
I love anything fried (from chicken to mars bars!) so when I spotted this little cart just outside the train station I knew I had to try the fried dough dessert. From sugar and cinammon to boston cream pie flavour, picking one was difficult! The dough is warm, light, and flaky which makes it the perfect sweet snack to eat while lounging in the Boston Common on a sunny day.
4. Ricotta Cannoli at Mike’s Pastry (300 Hanover St.)
Call me old fashion, but I like my cannoli’s filled with the classic ricotta for an authentic experience. The ones at Mike’s Pastry definitely don’t disappoint in taste or size with a crispy exterior and super creamy filling. If you are more adventurous, you can try one of the at least 20 other varieties available like peanut butter and oreo.
5. Boston Cream Pie at Omni Parker House (60 School St.)
I had to put this local classic on the list. If you are interested in tasting Boston cream pie, then you need to go to the original location where it was first created. You won’t be disappointed by this slice of cake.
