Maple time at the Sugar Shack la Famille Constantin

The emergence of spring time in Quebec means one thing: Sugaring Off!

In the past I have found myself heading to Mont St-Gregoire to get my maple fix due to its proximity from the South Shore of Montreal.  I also like heading there because the mountain provides some much needed exercise after eating all that yummy food. If you are considering the area check out my recommendation in my post here.

Constantin family tradition

This past year, I changed things up and headed North of Montreal and tried out a highly reputable spot run by the Constantin family in Saint-Eustache.  This charming sugar shack has been around for more than 50 years and serves up a traditional meal in a cozy atmosphere. The large dining hall features a stone fireplace and is decorated with beautiful twinkle lights and wood centrepieces.

On the menu

On the menu you can find all the usual fare: eggs, ham, sausages in syrup, beans, home made marinades, pea soup, crepes, sugar pie, and soft serve ice cream.  Of course the highlight is always the maple taffy served on snow.  Considering this a yearly indulgence, I took full advantage!

Family activities

Week-end are obviously the busiest time to visit the sugar shack. Aside from eating, there are many other activities taking place that is suitable for all ages. Inside the sugar shack there is a large hall for dancing, and arcade games for kids. There are also tables where you can sit around and play games. Outside there are a number of activities to keep the family busy, some charging a small fee. There is a farm where children can look at the animals and of course, a horse drawn sleigh ride.

If you are planning on experiencing this uniquely Quebecois tradition, I strongly recommend making reservations ahead of time so that you are not disappointed!
