Boating adventures in the Mauricie

This past week-end I was fortunate enough to be invited by family to go boating.  I love the water and I am always looking to discover new spots in Quebec so I could not say no to this opportunity.  My trip brought me to the Saint-Maurice river that borders three Quebec towns: La Tuque, Shawinigan, and Trois-Rivière. The Saint-Maurice is just over 500 km in length and feeds into the Saint-Lawrence river. It was a beautiful day for boating with the sun shining and a cool breeze.  Having been my first time on this river, I was immediately taken aback by the beautiful and serene landscape that serves as the backdrop.  Tall, evergreen covered mountains rise from the shore, dotted with the occasional house or silver church tower.  The water is still cold at this time of year, with the thermometer registering 66 degrees.  However, I was told that in mid-july it is much warmer and a pleasant swim to freshen up.  For those that prefer lounging on the beach and taking a dip where their feet touch the floor, there is a park located on Saint-Quentin Island in the Saint-Maurice river.  Aside from a sandy beach, you can also find a pool, various games to amuse children, and rustic camp sites.  If water is not your thing, there is the lovely Mauricie National Park in the area that offers plenty of options for nature lovers as well.

My trip would not have been complete without some culinary indulgence.  Nothing beats a poutine from a local food stand.  This time I opted for the Mexican poutine, complete with sour cream, salsa, lettuce, onion, peppers and beef.  Oh and lets not forget the signature brown sauce and squeaky cheese!  Yum 🙂  Whether you live in the area or just passing through, you should consider stopping by for the week-end.  It definitely has something for everyone!
