Camping in New York State

This past week-end I made my annual trip down to Ausable Point in Plattsburgh, NY for some camping along Lake Champlain. I couldn’t be happier with the sunny weather and cool breeze on the beach. Although the camping facilities are not the best I’ve seen, I keep coming back for the beach. Living in Quebec, I am not lucky enough to have beautiful coastal beaches with warm blue waters. However, this area of Lake Champlain is a fine a dupe. It’s got beautiful sandy shores that are pebble-free, the water is warm and clear, and the shore slopes slowly making it great for kids and those who are less comfortable in the water. As an added bonus, you have the Adirondack mountains as a back drop that provide spectacular sights. While I spent the better part of the week-end eating and sleeping on the beach, it’s a popular place for windsurfers and kite boarders. You can also rent kayaks and head out on the water to discover different bays along the shore. If you are lucky enough to own a boat, you can spend the day cruising on the lake and make a stop over in Burlington, Vermont. As an added bonus, it is a good fishing spot based on the number of people I saw with fishing canes. My campsite was a short walk to the beach set back in a more wooded area, but there some sites that are directly overlooking the beach. Those usually book fast, but if you have a flexible schedule you might be able to score one of these sites! With just over an hour drive from the Canadian border, it’s the perfect place for trying out sleeping ‘al fresco’ for the first time or just a fun day trip.
