Packing for a Conference

Conference Essentials

1. Black dress: It’s a classic piece no woman should be without.  This conservative dress is great under a blazer for feminine look during a conference and can be transformed to an elegant cocktail dress for gala events.

2. Dress pants: They keep you warm and polished.  Go for a dark neutral color to maximize their versatility and cover up stains (hey it happens when having buffet meals!)

3. Dark denim: These are great for travelling and for going out with colleagues and friends.  If your conference is really casual than you might be able to pull them off with heels and a blazer.

4. Printed skirt: If the weather is warmer or you prefer skirts in general go for a fun print to break up the uniformity of a blazer or blouse.  Just make sure to select one that arrives at or just above the knee.

5. Blazer: While most conference are pretty laid back, a blazer adds a level of professionalism that all young academics should strive for.  I opted for a bold colour to show off some of your personality, no need for stuffy black.

6. Grey Cardigan: As a fun alternative to a blazer, a cardigan is nice for travelling and for hanging out in your room during down time at a conference.

7. Fun blouses: Dressier than a simple t-shirt, blouses gives your outfit an instant flare and makes you look more mature and put together (than you actually are!)

8.  Shoes: Classic shoes like black pumps and a neutral ballet flat should get you through all the different conference activities.  Just make sure the are comfortable since often you might be standing around for periods of time networking with other colleagues.

9. Purses: A large tote is a must-have for conferences to carry your program book, notebook, pens, business cards, and all your personal items.  For after-conference get-togethers, go for a small clutch to carry the essentials.

10. Accessories: I would recommend staying conservative with jewlery.  A watch is a must to keep track of time and make sure you don’t miss an important lecture.  I also highly encourage bringing a scarf along in case the air conditioning is blasting and you need an extra layer of warmth.
