I am generally an extremely positive person and this blog is meant to be a reflection of that by focusing on the amazing and positive experiences while travelling. However, I felt I had to write this review… So where to start…. When I travel I like to save money by either preparing my own food or merging meals (brunch or lupper anyone?!?) and then splurging on one fabulous meal that really captures the local flavours and culture.
Fine Dining at La Maison du Pêcheur?
On this particular trip that meal was to be had at La Maison du Pêcheur (155 Pl Du Quai) in Percé. It had an impressive seafood menu, impeccable reviews on trip advisor, and wonderfully located on the waterfront. When I mention the impeccable reviews I really want to stress that its ranked number one on trip advisor by a significant number of people. In short, I had high expectations since the price tag was not cheap.
I was lucky that I was able to snag a table for dinner without a reservation, but if you plan on eating here (even after reading this review) than you should reserve. Since I hadn’t planned ahead, I wasn’t able to score one of the coveted table with the water view, but the whole restaurant has a great nautical flare that makes for a lovely ambiance. The service throughout the evening was very good, and my waitress was really nice, attentive, and helpful. Definitely one of the positives from the experience. Now on to the actual food….
The Meal Experience
I opted for the table hote, that appeared to provide good value with 4 services. After the waitress took my order she brought a complementary dish of crackers and salmon spread which was yummy and a nice touch. Then came the first dish, which I had the fishermen soup. This was really good, lots of pieces of fish, a flavorful tomato broth, and croutons, cheese, and rouille on the side. A definite hit on the menu. However, the person I was with had the seafood chowder which was way too thick, bordering on jello consistency. Not what I expect from a chowder.
Then came the main, I ordered the Trident which is defined as the following on the menu, “Lobster flesh in cointreau sauce, giant scallops w/ goat cheese sauce & fillet of salmon w/ a maple sugar & lemon sauce”. Sounds amazing, right? Wrong!!! First of all, it appeared to me that the fish had been pre cooked and then simply warmed up in the sauce since bits of the seafood was cold in places. Also, if you hadn’t read the menu you would never have guessed there were three different flavours on the dish. There was just one: bland diluted cream.
I was SO disappointed, after the great reviews I was expecting much more from this dish. The service continued with a house salad which was fine, and then what I hoped was going to be the saving grace: dessert! I got to chose from any of the desserts available and decided on the crème brûlée. I could tell the moment the waitress brought it to the table that something was wrong because it seemed rather liquidy.
Indeed, it was another disappointment, the crème brûlée was not firm but rather a soup and when you looked at the ‘cream’ it almost looked like the cream had curdled.
Was it worth it?
The whole meal cost 70$ per person for the table d’hôte and a glass of wine with tax and tip, which for the quantity of food is actually pretty reasonable. I really REALLY wanted to love this place, but the quality really lends me to recommend heading somewhere else for dinner because the flavours and execution fell short of what a restaurant this calibre should be delivering.
