L’Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix: One of the Most Popular Summits in the Alps

Aiguille du Midi Chamonix

During my stay to Chamonix, I loved the hiking and outdoor activities that the town had to offer. One of the highlights during my time was undoubtedly the visit to l’Aiguille du Midi, a famous destination in the Mont Blanc massif.

Ride to the top of L’Aiguille du Midi

To get to Aiguille du Midi, tickets can be bought on-site where the base of the cable cars are located (100 pl de l’Aiguille du Midi) in Chamonix. The adult price for a return trip was 63 Euros, but there are combination tickets that you can purchase that provides you with a discount. In my case, I had bought a 2 day pass because I had some hiking planned.

The first cable car brings you half way to Plan de l’Aiguille which is the starting point of the Grand Balcon du Nord hike. From there it is a second trip, albeit a longer one to the top of the mountain at 3800m! The total time to get there is roughly 20minutes.

I enjoyed the riding the cable cars because you have amazing views of Chamonix and the alps as you make your way up. However, if you are afraid of heights you may find this part a little nerve-wracking. It is also a popular tourist activity, so in peak times expect line-ups and the cable cars to get a tad crowded.

Another important tip is to come dressed appropriately. On top of the mountain it is cold and windy!  Ideally go with closed shoes and bring some pants, sweatshirt and windbreaker so you don’t freeze.

Sensational views

If you have any doubts about whether it is a worthwhile activity, I would say do it! The landscape is just outstanding especially when it is sunny summer weather at the base and you are greeted by snow-capped mountains at the top.  I was fascinated to watch groups of ice climbers making there way up summits of neighbouring mountains.

There is a gift shop, a restaurant/cafe to warm up, and a museum highlighting the adrenaline sports that take place on the mountains.  I have so much fascination and respect for individuals who can tightrope across mountain valleys!

From the mountain summit you can pay an additional fee to take the Mont-Blanc Panorama cable car that brings you across the ice fields into Italy.

Step into the void

If you want to take an impressive photo, you can also line-up and take a picture in the void, a transclucent box built out of the side of the cliff.
