LOV @ Quartier Dix30 – Vegan Restaurant Review

LOV Vegan Restaurant Dix30

I am a sucker for a good deal, so when my friends and I received a 2 for 1 coupon for LOV, a vegan restaurant that just opened at Dix30, I definitely wanted to check it out.

A LOV-ely Atmosphere

One of the primary draws of LOV is undoubtedly the amazing atmosphere they have thoughtfully put together through the decor. The combination of clean white walls, vibrant green plants, and chic copper accessories make it a relaxing and convivial place. And in the world of social media… very instagram-able!

We ordered the BBQ burger, the Cheeseburger big LOV, and LOV Tacos, alongside the Lemonade and Berry Best Smoothie.

BBQ Burger

I ordered the BBQ burger wth a side of fries for 15$. This burger is an imitation of pulled pork except the meat is replaced with jackfruit. I’ve never had jackfruit and I was curious to see the texture and taste.

To be completely honest, I am always doubtful when vegan foods get compared to things like cheese and meat. In fact, sometimes it can set up false expectations and unfairly judge a meal, so I tried to evaluate the burger on it’s own merits versus it’s ability to ‘pass’ as actual meat.

The burger came with BBQ jackfruit, lettuce, tomato, caramelized onions and aioli. Overall, I have mixed feelings about this dish. For one, I’m not really sold on the notion of BBQ jackfruit. If you are curious about the texture, it is very similar to pineapple. I think it would have been much better had the jackfruit had some caramelization on it to give it more texture and warm it up. Instead it felt like the jackfruit had just been tossed in some BBQ sauce and served at room temperature which left it feeling a little slimy.

Moreover, there was so much of it that it essentially all fell out of the bun when I tried to pick it up. I also thought they could have put slightly less aioli since it got the burger a little soggy, but that might be a personal preference. On a more positive note, the bread bun was great and the fries were super crispy.

Big LOV Cheeseburger

My friends had a better experience with the Big LOV Cheeseburger (15$). It came with tomato, onion, pickles, vegan mozzarella and a ‘big LOV’ sauce. They found it pretty much on par with a regular cheeseburger, although they noted that as they finished eating it the taste of the ‘cheese’ was starting to be a bit strong for them.

LOV Tacos

The tacos (13$) were served with roasted corn, fried lupine tempeh, avocado and all the usual fixings. They were a hit, so perhaps going with a vegetarian option is the best way to proceed if you’re new to vegan food.

Refreshments

The drinks were also well received. I was told the Lemonade was a nice balance of tartness and sweetness which was perfect for a hot summer day!
