Day 2 Agra and the Taj Mahal

As I mentioned in my previous post, I took an early morning train to Agra. To be honest, in the 4 hours I spent in Delhi I am glad I didn’t spend anymore time there… Too much chaos for my taste. The train was on time (a miracle) and they served some food, so we got breakfast. When we got to Agra we transferred to our hotel. It is quite full with other young groups and some older couples, so it must have a good rep…. BUT, I would like to say that it makes the chalet from whale watching seem like a 5 class accommodation LOL…. It really is basic and since we are using an Indian measuring stick, let me just say that I already killed two bugs. Could definitely be worse, but I would have preferred better. There is also the occasional mice that runs across the lobby floor, if it hadn’t been for the mice in my apartment I would have been freaking out. See, everything happens for a reason. OK, so after we checked-in, myself and the only other female solo traveller headed out to visit the big 3 attractions: Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Baby Taj. The Taj Mahal is as surreal as you can imagine. It’s large, white and simply amazing to see. I dare say it rivals some other great places I’ve seen in Europe (no offense to the Vatican or Eiffel Tower). The inside is less exciting, mostly because it is a mausoleum, so it’s rather plain. Afterwards, we went to see the Baby Taj, which was the first experiment with using white marble to build. It is ADORABLE… Not an exact replica of the Taj, but super cute and really peaceful. Lastly, we stopped at the Agra fort, which is large fort/palace/maze made of marble and red sandstone. Apparently, it is the most important fort in India…. Essentially that made up our afternoon and soon I am going to head off to dinner. Overall, I am feeling a little tired of being on the road, part of me thinks I should have just done the golden triangle (7 days) and head back, but I really want some beach time…. I think it’s just harder coming off a great two weeks at Sangam and the little oasis. On the positive side, I now have people to visit in Japan, Denmark, Florida and across Australia… ! I also wish I had some miracle transporter where I could buy all this stuff and it would magically appear back in canada, since there are some cheap, neat stuff, but I have no room to put them…. Oh well…. next time 😉 Tomorrow I am taking a 6 hour bus ride to Jaipur, the pink city….

Poor you with all the delays (it seems like all problems with flights happen to you…reminiscent of Europe??)! At least your transfer flight was waiting for you and you didn't have to stay long in Delhi. I can't wait to see pictures of the Taj Mahal…it must have been an amazing experience! I'm glad you don't have psycho people on your trip and you get along with them well. Can't wait to hear more interesting stories!

hey sis!! i hope you managed to recoup that sleep! i'm assuming you have easier access to the internet now?? don't worry about having taken the longer trip – as you said, it'll end with some beach time, so make the most of it! xx

Be wary of that other lone girl traveler! Don't lend money to anyone – especially her. Take photos of everyone around you and upload it to an FTP site. Also, be wary of the Australians, Australia was a penal colony after all.
